The Latvian-Swiss Project “Curing of the Historically Polluted Areas at the Territory of Sarkandaugava” has been completed

On 1st June there took place the conference, during which Free Port of Riga Authority jointly with the State Environmental Protection Service summed up an individual project “Curing of the Historically Polluted Areas at the Territory of Sarkandaugava” implemented within the limits of the Latvian-Swiss cooperation program.

Thanks to the financial support of the Swiss government in 2011 there was started implementation of the Project “Curing of the Historically Polluted Areas at the Territory of Sarkandaugava” aimed at the improvement of the quality of ground waters, surface waters, ground and soil, improvement of the quality of environment, as well as reduction of the thread to human health.

The works were performed in the area of Sarkandaugava and Milgravis channel at the territories of the companies of Free Port of Riga SIA «OVI Riga», SIA «Eko Osta», SIA «Woodison» and SIA «VL Bunkering». Within six years there were pumped out and transferred for regeneration 1721 tons of oil products, as well as bailed out and transferred for treatment more than 7122 tons of the ground contaminated with viscous and asphalt-like oil products.

There was built a waterproof sheet-pile wall and a drainage system 376 meters long with the value of EUR 3.8mil at the territory of SIA «OVI Riga» along the bank of the branch of the Sarkandaugava River. Along the bank of Milgravis channel – there was arranged a drainage system 110 meters long. At present all curing and refurbishment works have been fully completed at the territory with the total area of 8 ha in accordance with both phases of the project. In the aggregate, it was invested 155.3mil Swiss francs in the project. 85% of the value of the project - 13 million Swiss francs - was invested by the Swiss government.
